Purpose
The Managing Dentist is the lead dental provider for our Community Health Center. We are committed to providing comprehensive, accessible, and affordable oral health care to underserved residents. This role combines direct patient care with clinical leadership, ensuring the delivery of high-quality dentistry in alignment with our mission and in compliance with required guidelines.
The Managing Dentist serves as the sole dentist managing our dental clinic. The Managing Dentist provides preventative, restorative, and emergency dental services, clinical supervision to dental assistants, and collaborates with medical and behavioral health teams to ensure integrated care. The Managing Dentist may be directed by the Chief Medical Officer to perform other duties in accordance with requirements, contractual agreements, as well as policies, procedures and protocols established by our Board of Directors.
Responsibilities
Clinical Care:
Provide comprehensive general dentistry services, including preventive, diagnostic, restorative, and emergency care to patients over the age of 16.
Ensure accurate, complete, and timely documentation of patient encounters in eClinicalWorks, the electronic health record.
Adhere to standards of care, infection control protocols, HIPAA, OSHA, and CDC guidelines. Work with dental support staff and the Operations Manager to ensure the dental center’s compliance with the health center, federal, and state infection control and safety regulations.
Obtains dental specialists for general dentistry patients by referring to endodontists, oral/maxillofacial surgeons, orthodontists, pediatric dentists, periodontists, and prosthodontists
Prescribe medications in compliance with DEA regulations and clinical guidelines.
Clinical Leadership and Oversight:
Serve as the lead dentist at the clinic, setting the tone for quality and compassionate patient care.
Provider clinical supervision and mentorship to dental hygienists, dental assistants, and dental students (as applicable).
Collaborate with the Chief Medical Officer and Chief Operating Officer on policies, protocols, and quality improvement initiatives.
Monitor productivity, quality metrics, and patient outcomes; participate in performance improvement programs.
Compliance and Quality:
Ensure services meet HRSA and FQHC-specific standards and requirements.
Maintain safe, secure, and healthy work environment by establishing, following, and enforcing standards and procedures; maintaining asepsis; complying with the State's Dental Practice Act and other health and legal regulations.
Participate in peer reviews, audits, and compliance reviews.
Maintain licensure, DEA registration, and continuing education requirements.
Community and Mission:
Promote the mission of the health center by delivering comprehensive, compassionate care to all patients.
Participate in outreach, education, and community engagement activities as requested.
Support integration of oral health with primary care and behavioral health services.
Qualifications
Must be a DDS or DMD from an accredited school
Active Virginia License as a Dentist
CPR Certification
Experience with Dental Software, eClinicalWorks preferred
Knowledge of OSHA and HIPAA regulations
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a wide variety of people, particularly those experiencing socio-economic disparity.
Ability to analyze medical records and prescribed protocol to formulate effective therapeutic treatment plans
Knowledge of Federal, State and institutional regulations and guidelines for the provision of dental outpatient services
Ability to independently assess the nature and extent of dental, both periodontal and caries risk assessments and associated conditions and pathology in dental patients
Ability to perform a full range of established dental procedures
Knowledge of patient screening, charting and medical history procedures and documentation
Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical co-workers
Compensation and Production Bonus Structure
Daily Guarantee: $950 per 8-hour clinical day (approx. $182,400 annually at 4 day week, 48 weeks/year).
Productivity Bonus (Adjusted Production Basis):
20% of Adjusted Production from $20,001 to $35,000 per month
25% of Adjusted Production from $35,001 to $50,000 per month
30% of Adjusted Production above $50,000 per month
Realistic Annual Potential: $250,000 – $300,000+, depending on production.

Membership in VCHA is open to all Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) and Federally Qualified Health Center Look-Alikes operating delivery sites in Virginia.
