The Staff Periodontist serves as a practicing dentist who performs a full range of professional dental procedures in connection with the treatment of commonly encountered dental diseases or dental health problems requiring standard corrective, restorative, or preventive measures. In addition, the Staff Periodontist will provide direct clinical patient care through preventative and surgical strategies related to their scope of specialty including surgical placement of dental implants. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Dentist Basic Requirements A degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery or dental medicine resulting from a course of education in dentistry. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are (1) United States and Canadian schools of dentistry listed by the Commission on Dental Accreditation(CODA), in the list published for the year in which the course of study was completed.(2) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia as qualifying for full and unrestricted licensure provided the licensure requirements include a written examination measuring science achievement and a performance examination measuring clinical competence certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. ~AND~ Completed, or you are currently completing, a residency program in general practice or specialty, or comparable experience as a dentist actively involved in treating medically compromised patients. ~AND~ Currently hold, or will hold, a current, full and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Note: Dentists must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure. Additional Requirement: In addition to the above, VHA Staff Dentists must demonstrate effectiveness coordinating and managing interdisciplinary collaboration with both internal and external stakeholders to optimize the care of patients under their purview. PREFERRED: Experience with 3D digital imaging, interpretation, and planning. Prior experience with VHA health system. The Periodontist shall be proficient in all aspects of general dentistry, and may at times be requested to perform limited comprehensive dental treatment beyond the Periodontal Specialty focus. Treatment plan development for the patient in collaboration with other dental providers. The surgical placement of dental implants. Dental Implant presurgical planning including any necessary bone grafting including such procedures as sinus augmentation. The ongoing evaluation and maintenance of implants and the management of complications. Patient management of periodontal disease thru prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. Hard and soft tissue surgical procedures for cosmetic, rehabilitation, and disease management. Periodontal plastic and esthetic surgery techniques including gingival augmentation, root coverage procedures, and crown lengthening. Regenerative and reparative surgery including osseous grafting, guided tissue regeneration, and use of biologics. Perform simple and complex tooth extractions. Will comply with all processes and procedures including infection control, OSHA, radiology, and HIPPA regulations in compliance with VHA policy. Will provide education and training to members of the medical and dental staff through various modalities including conferences, committees, and lectures. Required to treat patient population with high percentage of medically (physical/psych/social) complex and compromised individuals. Must provide timely, accurate, and completed record documentation and consult management utilizing the organizational software and applications. Practice in accordance with accepted professional standards, organizational values, and with a commitment to excellent customer service. Incumbent may be assigned limited administrative or managerial responsibilities in support of service operations. SUPERVISORY CONTROLS Dentists are licensed independent practitioners that practice based on their specific approved privileges and guidance derived from VHA, Medical Center and Service Directives/Memorandums. The dentist assigned is directly supervised by the Chief of Service and indirectly the Chief of Staff. VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package.
