The STLVAMC has approximately 11,000 Veterans who qualify for full, comprehensive dental eligibility. Most of our patients are both acutely and chronically medically complex. The Dental Service is responsible for providing in-patient and outpatient care for the full scope of oral health needs. Staff dentists/specialists are expected to successfully navigate the interdisciplinary environment by collaborating closely with dental and medical providers to provide world-class healthcare. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Dentist Basic Requirements A degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery or dental medicine resulting from a course of education in dentistry. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are (1) United States and Canadian schools of dentistry listed by the Commission on Dental Accreditation(CODA), in the list published for the year in which the course of study was completed.(2) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia as qualifying for full and unrestricted licensure provided the licensure requirements include a written examination measuring science achievement and a performance examination measuring clinical competence certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. ~AND~ Completed, or you are currently completing, a residency program in general practice or specialty, or comparable experience as a dentist actively involved in treating medically compromised patients. ~AND~ Currently hold, or will hold, a current, full and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Note: Dentists must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure. ["The Dentist (Oral Maxillofacial Surgery) will be responsible to perform oral surgery procedures in both the outpatient and inpatient settings and function as an Oral Surgeon in all aspects of patient care. This includes examination, work-up, diagnosis, consultation, order/prescribe medications, and provision of treatment to patients presenting with conditions within the oral cavity and adjacent structures. They will accept inpatient and outpatient consults from Primary Care and other Specialty clinic providers within the Medical Center, provide consultative and operative services in both the Dental Service outpatient clinic and Operating Room while meeting the Acute Care, Specialty Services, and Medical Center requirements. The incumbent will maintain a regularly scheduled outpatient clinic as well as be available for consultative, emergency, and administrative duties/tasks during normal business hours. Primary Location: John Cochran Division, 915 N Grand Blvd., St. Louis, MO 63106 Major Duties and Responsibilities: (include but not limited to) Performs dental examination and consultations for the purpose of diagnosing and/or treating head and neck pathology, TMJ-related conditions/complaints, orofacial pain, and more. Performs surgical procedures such as extractions, alveoloplasties, other preprosthetic procedures, and biopsies along with other surgical and nonsurgical procedures within the scope of practice both in the outpatient setting and periodically in the operating room. Prescribes medications for dental problems, including pain medications or antibiotics. Gives patients local anesthesia and prescribes light oral sedation as appropriate prior to procedures. Orders and/or interprets diagnostic measures, such as radiographic images, other imaging, models, etc. Keeps diligent records relating to the treatment and management of patients. Supports the Dental Service, staff, and Medical Center as a subject matter expert in oral surgery. Manages and communicates with other staff members to provide care to patients. Participates in and supports Dental Service administrative tasks, program/project development, educational initiatives, oversight of specialty-specific Community Care, and more as directed by the Chief, Dental Service. Maintains professional qualifications, participates in customer service training, computer training, and attends to mandated medical center training, including BLS and/or ACLS.
