The position is at the full performance level located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), at the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System, Dental Service. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 06/03/2022. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-09 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-08. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Individual Occupational Requirements (Must met first by listing in resume): Individual Occupational Requirement (this must be met first before Specialized Experience): Do you have the following: Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above: Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: Use of dental laboratory material such as impression materials, plasters, stones, hydrocolloids, waxes, metals, acrylics, porcelain, and similar materials. Use of laboratory equipment such as hand tools, dental lathes, engines, and hand pieces, furnaces, casting machines, presses, flasks, and related equipment. Use of precision instruments such as articulators, surveyors, and microanalyzers. Construction of dental prosthetic appliances. OR Education and Training: For GS-3: Successful completion of the first full year (9 months) of the 2-year program of study and training in dental technology in a school for dental laboratory technicians approved by the Council on Dental Education of the American Dental Association. For GS-4: Successful completion of a full 2-year program (18 months) of study and training in dental technology as described above for GS-3. For GS-5: Successful completion of an approved apprenticeship program consisting of at least 2000 hours a year for 3 years. For GS-6: Successful completion of a full 4-year apprenticeship program consisting of at least 2000 hours a year. The successful completion of training courses in dental laboratory work in the Armed Forces or other Federal agencies will be allowed appropriate credit for specialized experience on a month-for-month basis up through GS-5. Licensed professional dentists will be considered qualified for any grade level if they have, in the aggregate, the required experience in dental laboratory procedures. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Specialized Experience GS-09: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-08 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Developing the design of the appliance, personally fabricating, or overseeing the fabrication of the appliance, and resolving problems in its fabrication; or Thorough knowledge of oral anatomy, tooth morphology and dentition, a thorough knowledge of laboratory materials, tools, and equipment, and a very high degree of skill in their use; or Maintain and oversee maintenance of all in-house labs. OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. The ability to lift plaster boxes weighing 30 pounds from the floor to the counter to the plaster bins is required. The severe nature of the dental abnormalities to be overcome require working under complex clinical conditions, including but not limited to difficult problems of retention, balance, reducing tension on natural teeth and tissue, and similar problems. The Dental laboratory technician does digital Scanning, designing of prosthesis, and milling using equipment and materials as provided. This includes fixed and removable appliances, and other treatment needs of staff dentists.
