This Dental Assistant position is located at the Chalmers P. Wylie VA Ambulatory Care Clinic, Columbus, Ohio. The employee will be responsible for performing the duties of a dental assistant in an outpatient dental clinic. This is an independent freestanding medical clinic which provides a full range of ambulatory health care services to eligible veterans. The majority of patients seen in the Dental Service have multiple medical comorbidities, psychiatric disorders, and age-related illnesses. Major duties include:- Assists dentists in all phases of dentistry including the specialized areas: prosthodontics (fixed and removable), endodontics (including endodontic surgery), periodontics (including periodontal surgery), and oral surgery (including implant placement); - Provides additional support to other assistants and co-workers during the workday; - Utilizes the techniques of four-handed dentistry in the dental operatory and assists in the operating room following operating room sterile procedures when assigned; - Prepares dental medicaments and impression materials per manufacturers' instructions and labels materials accordingly. Adheres to the necessary clinic standard operating procedures, aseptic technique, and infection control procedures for the entire set-up, treatment, and takedown phases of patient care; - Receives and appoints patients which may involve triaging the patient to determine the urgency of the dental condition; -Participates in patient identification and time out procedures per the Joint Commission National Safety Goals. Assists in monitoring the patient by noting vital signs; - Maintains dental equipment and materials in a clean and operative condition and properly stores adequate levels of supplies in the treatment rooms; -Performs well in expanded duty areas including the fabrication of provisional crowns, making alginate impressions, and pouring casts in the laboratory when indicated; - Records a thorough dental history for the treating provider and provides patient education to include: preventive dentistry, general nutrition, and tobacco counseling.
